Sleepless Nights in Low-Lying Colonies, 2014 Flood Memories Haunt Families Despite Reassurances.
Srinagar: The Jhelum River has shown signs of stabilization, yet residents in low-lying areas of Srinagar, such as Lasjan, Mehjoor Nagar, and Kursoo Rajbagh, remain in a state of panic and fear.
Locals express anxiety over potential flooding, with many unable to sleep due to the persistent threat of rising waters. Despite official reports indicating that water levels are receding, residents are concerned that a single heavy rainfall could lead to disaster, recalling the traumatic experiences of the 2014 floods. The psychological impact of the situation is significant, with residents feeling a constant sense of unease. They acknowledge that while officials are monitoring the situation, true peace of mind will only come when the river has fully receded. Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control department report that river levels at key monitoring points are below danger thresholds, having decreased by two to three feet in the last day. However, they caution that fluctuations in water levels may still occur due to changing weather conditions. Despite these reassurances, the fear among residents in flood-prone neighborhoods persists, highlighting the deep-seated anxiety that remains in the community.
