Water Crosses Danger Mark, Roads Closed, Weatherman Forecasts Clear Skies
Jammu, Srinagar: Heavy rainfall in both Jammu division and as well as Kashmir valley has led to severe flooding, resulting in the deaths of two individuals in Rajouri and prompting widespread evacuations.
Reports said that a mother and daughter lost their lives when a wall collapsed in their home due to the rains. Rescue operations are ongoing, with a man reported missing in Jammu. The region has experienced three consecutive days of heavy rainfall, with Katra recording the highest precipitation at 106.3 mm. Water levels in various bodies, including the Jhelum River, have surpassed danger marks, causing significant flooding in low-lying areas of Srinagar. Residents in Khushipora Telbal reported rapid inundation of homes, leading to distress and damage to property. The Jammu division’s rivers, including the Tawi and Chenab, are also flowing above danger levels, increasing flood risks. Rescue efforts have been extensive, with around 40 individuals trapped in Akhnoor and 25 nomadic families rescued in Anantnag. The Deputy Commissioner Doda reported substantial damage to infrastructure, with numerous homes destroyed and roads affected. Authorities are actively conducting relief operations and have urged residents to heed safety advisories. Weather forecasts indicate a potential improvement in conditions, although brief rain spells may continue.
The Meteorological Department has advised caution around water bodies and unstable structures. The heavy rains have caused landslides, leading to the closure of major highways, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, and disrupting traffic across the region. The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps has been involved in rescue operations, evacuating civilians and providing medical assistance to those affected. The situation remains critical, with ongoing efforts to restore connectivity and support the impacted communities.
