Jaishankar, Wang Yi Stress On Border Stability
Srinagar: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing to discuss the India-China bilateral relationship. The meeting focused on recent progress in stabilizing ties, emphasizing people-centric engagements, particularly in light of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Foreign Minister Jaishankar acknowledged China’s cooperation in resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and both sides agreed to enhance travel and direct flight connectivity to promote people-to-people exchanges. Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border for the development of bilateral relations and supported ongoing de-escalation efforts. He also highlighted the need for collaboration on trans-border rivers, specifically the resumption of hydrological data sharing by China, and raised concerns regarding restrictive trade measures affecting economic cooperation. The ministers engaged in discussions on regional and global issues of mutual interest, with Jaishankar expressing India’s support for China’s upcoming SCO Presidency. The talks were characterized as constructive and forward-looking, with an agreement to maintain communication through future visits and meetings. Additionally, Jaishankar met with China’s Vice President Han Zheng and the Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, Liu Jianchao, before traveling to Tianjin for the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting and related SCO events.
