Leh (Ladakh)|June, 16 : The Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army commemorated the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who lost their lives during the Galwan Valley clashes on June 16, 2020, marking the fifth anniversary of the incident. In a tribute posted on social media, the Corps emphasized the enduring courage of the soldiers and expressed deep respect for their families, highlighting that their sacrifice continues to inspire future generations. Monday morning Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, also honored the fallen soldiers, praising their commitment to protecting India’s borders. He reiterated that their bravery and sacrifice would remain etched in the hearts of all Indians, offering heartfelt salutes to these heroes.
The Galwan Valley clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers, with significant casualties on the Chinese side as well. This incident heightened tensions between India and China, prompting military deployments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh and increased surveillance to deter potential aggression. Since then, both nations have gradually disengaged from various border areas, establishing buffer zones to reduce friction.
Significant agreements have been reached between India and China regarding disengagement, including a notable agreement in February 2021 concerning the Pangong Lake area and a completion of disengagement in the Gogra Heights-Hot Springs area by September 2022. Most recently, in October 2024, both countries agreed on patrolling arrangements in the Depsang Plains and Demchok, following earlier disengagement efforts. Diplomatic and military discussions have facilitated these developments, with high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping underscoring ongoing efforts to manage border tensions.
