Uri : In the face of a grave humanitarian crisis triggered by continuous shelling and cross-border hostilities, the Sub-Division Uri witnessed an extraordinary display of dedication, coordination, and public service. On 7th May 2025, a 24×7 Emergency Control Room was swiftly established at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Uri, under the direct supervision of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Uri.
The situation in Uri had rapidly escalated, with heavy shelling endangering civilian lives and disrupting normal life. In response, a specially assigned team was tasked with round-the-clock evacuation and relief operations, ensuring the safety of thousands residing in high-risk zones. The team included Javid Gani, Banday, Aijaz Ahmad Lone, Javed Iqbal Budoo,Aftab Ahmad Kakroo, Aijaz Ahmad Chalkoo and Mohammad Iqbal Banday. Yasir, representing the Jammu & Kashmir Police, was stationed with the team 24×7, playing a vital role in maintaining law and order and facilitating safe passage during evacuations. Amid the thunder of exploding shells and looming threats, this team remained stationed at the Control Room, receiving thousands of distress calls from residents seeking urgent help. With remarkable composure and tireless effort, the team coordinated with field units and local authorities to ensure timely and safe evacuation.
Within just 48 hours, approximately 15,000 people—including women, children, and elderly—were successfully evacuated to safer locations. Their efforts were further bolstered by inter-departmental cooperation, with active involvement from all wings of the administration, including revenue, police, health, civil defence, and local volunteers. Despite working under extreme stress and danger, no member of the team sought recognition for their selfless contributions. Their focus remained solely on safeguarding lives and restoring a sense of security in a region gripped by fear. The Administration—from the District Level to the Sub-Divisional Level—remained on high alert, working hand in hand with community stakeholders and volunteers to ensure the operation’s success. This episode stands as a testament to what can be achieved through courage, unity, and unwavering commitment to public service. The sacrifices made by these silent heroes have not gone unnoticed by the people of Uri and the wider Kashmir Valley.
