Major Conviction Secured in an NDPS Case by Police In Ang

5 accused sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fine

Srinagar : The Court of Special Judge designated under the NDPS Act, Anantnag on Thursday convicted five accused persons in case FIR No. 63/2022 U/S 8/20, 29 NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Kokernag.
In a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar Police identified the convicted individuals as Mohammad Rafiq Bhat, Anayatullah Bhat, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Mubeena Banoo and Sajad Ahmad Ganie. Stating that the case is of the year 2022 in connection of which Police Station Kokernag while acting on reliable intelligence had registered an FIR against the accused for being involved in the illegal trade of narcotics, Police in its statement further said that the said accused were attempting to sell charas-like substance to youth and later while acting swiftly, police apprehended the accused on the spot and seized 5 kilograms of charas-like substance from their possession. Police in its statement further said that while following a thorough investigation by Sub Inspector Mohammad Rafiq of Police Station Kokernag, a detailed charge sheet was presented before the Court and during the trial, the Prosecution, represented by Sr PO Arif Majeed Romshoo, produced 17 witnesses in support of the case. Stating that after carefully scrutinizing the evidence and hearing both the prosecution and defense, the Court convicted all five accused on 7th May this year, Police in its statement furthermore said that upon hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment and considering both mitigating and aggravating circumstances, the Court sentenced the accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1,00,000/- each.
In the concluding para of its above quoted statement Police said that SSP Anantnag Amrit Pal Singh, has appreciated the dedicated efforts of the Investigating Officer, Sr PO and the entire team of Police Station Kokernag for their professionalism, diligence, and commitment in securing this conviction, adding therein that this judgment reflects the resolve of J&K Police to combat drug menace and safeguard the youth from the clutches of narcotic abuse.
