Delhi: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday slammed the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, describing it as a “brazen assault on the Constitution.”

With the bill now scheduled for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Gandhi condemned the government’s actions, accusing the BJP of using it as part of a “broader strategy to keep society in a state of permanent polarization”.

“The bill was in effect bulldozed through,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Moreover, she also stated that the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill represents another attack on the Constitution, and reaffirmed her party’s strong opposition to the proposed legislation.

While accusing the BJP of “aggressively attacking the Congress-ruled states, Sonia Gandhi called upon the party Members of Parliament to “respond with equal vigor, highlighting the failures and mismanagement in BJP-led states”.

Gandhi also raised concern over the “frequent adjournment of the Parliament” and accused the government of not allowing the Leaders of Opposition of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to speak in the Houses.

She also spoke about the challenges posed by China and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi of giving “clean chit to China on June 19th, 2020” adding that “Modi’s statement has adversely impacted India’s negotiating position”.

Sonia Gandhi stated that they have consistently raised concerns about the need for free and fair elections, urging Parliament to discuss the functioning of the Election Commission and its unclear rules and procedures. She pointed out that some of these rules are currently being challenged in the Supreme Court, yet even a brief discussion on the matter was denied.

Gandhi was speaking at the CPP general body meeting at the Central Hall, Samvidhan Sadan, which was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders.
