Maha Shivratri Celebrated with Great Devotion at Kheer Bhawani Temple

G’bal: Maha Shivratri, locally known as Herath, was celebrated with immense devotion and enthusiasm at the revered Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulmullah, Ganderbal district. The temple, beautifully adorned with flowers and traditional decorations, witnessed a large gathering of devotees who participated in special prayers, bhajans, and religious rituals, seeking blessings from Lord Shiva.
For Kashmiri Pandits, Herath is one of the most significant festivals, symbolizing the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The occasion is marked by the preparation of traditional Kashmiri dishes, with fish being a key part of the festive meal. Devotees believe that rainfall or snowfall on this sacred day is a sign of divine blessings, further elevating the spiritual essence of the festival.
A devotee shared, “Herath is not just a festival; it is a way of life for us. It is celebrated over three days with great religious fervor. On the first day, special ‘poojas’ are held in Shiva temples, and on the second day, our Kashmiri Muslim brethren visit our homes to extend their greetings, reinforcing the bond of communal harmony.”
Another devotee, overwhelmed by the spiritual atmosphere, expressed, “Visiting Kheer Bhawani during Herath fills us with immense peace and devotion. The serene ambiance of the temple, coupled with the collective prayers of hundreds of devotees, creates a truly divine experience. We pray for peace, prosperity, and happiness for all.”
Many devotees traveled from different parts of Kashmir and beyond to take part in the grand celebrations. The temple premises echoed with the chanting of Shiva mantras, and the sight of devotees lighting oil lamps added to the festive grandeur. Despite the cold weather, the enthusiasm and faith of the worshippers remained unwavering.
The celebrations at Kheer Bhawani Temple once again reaffirmed the deep-rooted spiritual and cultural significance of Herath, bringing together communities in devotion, harmony, and festivity.
