Online gambling is emerging as a growing concern in Kashmir’s society, bringing with it a host of social, economic, and psychological challenges. The rise of digital platforms and easy access to smartphones and the internet have contributed to this phenomenon, which is particularly affecting the youth. Here’s an analysis of the issue:
Key Concerns: Many individuals, particularly young people, are lured by the promise of quick money. However, most end up losing their savings or even borrowing money, leading to financial distress and debt. Online gambling platforms are designed to be highly engaging, fostering addiction. This leads to a cycle of continuous gambling in the hope of recovering losses, worsening the situation. Financial problems and addiction often strain family relationships. Instances of domestic disputes and broken relationships have been reported due to gambling-related issues.
Mental Health Impact: Anxiety, depression, and a sense of hopelessness are common among individuals who experience losses. In extreme cases, this has led to self-harm and suicide.

“Online gambling is not just an individual problem but a societal issue that requires a coordinated effort from families, authorities, and the community to address.”

Underlying Factors

Unemployment: The high unemployment rate in the Kashmir makes the promise of easy money through gambling attractive to many young people.
Lack of Awareness: Many are unaware of the legal, financial, and psychological risks associated with online gambling.
Possible Solutions: Awareness Campaigns: Government and non-governmental organizations can educate people about the risks of online gambling
Support Systems: Establishing helplines and rehabilitation centers for those struggling with gambling addiction !  Online gambling is not just an individual problem but a societal issue that requires a coordinated effort from families, authorities, and the community to address.
