“As surge in tourist footfall necessitates an extra vigil over the practices and procedures of the waste management, the greater responsibility lies on the Municipal Commissioners of the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu besides the twin Directorates of the Local bodies Department in Srinagar and Jammu.”

Chief Secretary Attal Dulloo calling for action plans to improve the standards of waste disposal management is an indication that all is not going well with the waste disposal management in cities and towna across Jammu & Kashmir. The flaws as such need to be identified and resolved immediately by the civic bodies that fall under the administrative control of J&K Housing and Urban Development Department. The directive for pursuing scientific methods for managing  solid and liquid waste comes from the highest bureaucratic office ahead of the forthcoming summer tourist season in both Kashmir Valley and Jammu division. As surge in tourist footfall necessitates an extra vigil over the practices and procedures of the waste management, the greater responsibility lies on the Municipal Commissioners of the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu besides the twin Directorates of the Local bodies Department in Srinagar and Jammu. The waste disposal can’t be managed alone by the Municipal Commissioners of the twin capital cities but greater responsibilities lies on the heads of the civic bodies at famed tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalalgam, Sonamarg and all other such tourist places. It is not only the surge in tourist footfall and swelling nos for the annual Amarnath Yatra but the growing population and increasing migration from rural to urban areas also necessitates extension and expansion of waste disposal management facikites across cities and towns in Jammu & Kashmir.

“Not only extension and expansion of waste disposal management methods but improvement in the standards of waste disposal management practices also deserves and demands immediate attention of the civic bodies across cities and towns in both Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division. Improvement in the waste disposal management would improve civic facilities not just at tourist places but also on the travelling routes of Amarnath Yatris in Kashmir Valley. Administrative wisdom demands that waste disposal actions are sought from both the twin municipal corporations of Srinagar and Jammu and as well as heads of civic bodies of other cities and towns through twin Directorates of Local Bodies Department of Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division for immediate implementation from March onwards this year.”

In fact wisdom demands that monthly reports on waste disposal management are sought from the municipal commissioners of the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu and as well as heads of civic bodies of major towns of both Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division.
