Anantnag: The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) on Thursday organized an expert talk on the “Role and Importance of Music in Society” today. The event featured Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Head of the Department of Music at Government Degree College, Hiranagar, as the resource person. His insightful presentation captivated the audience, comprising NSS volunteers and faculty members, by exploring the multifaceted impact of music on individuals and society as a whole.
The event commenced with an introduction to the profound effects of sound on human behavior and emotions. Dr. Bhushan explained that music transcends mere entertainment, influencing mental states, emotional well-being, and social harmony. He highlighted how different musical forms, whether classical, folk, or contemporary, have historically played a significant role in shaping cultural identities and fostering community cohesion.
During his talk, Dr. Bhushan shed light on the government’s initiatives aimed at promoting folk and Indian classical music, particularly underlining the importance of preserving local musical traditions. He mentioned various schemes and platforms that support artists and musicians, encouraging NSS volunteers to become ambassadors of their rich cultural heritage. He further explained that music is not only a tool for artistic expression but also for personal growth, emphasizing that it can develop qualities such as patience, resilience, and emotional balance. Drawing from his own experiences in music education, Dr. Bhushan elaborated on the therapeutic benefits of music, explaining how it serves as a powerful medium for stress relief, mental clarity, and emotional healing.
The talk also included a motivational call to action, urging volunteers to actively participate in preserving and promoting local arts and culture. Dr. Bhushan emphasized the importance of youth engagement in safeguarding the cultural roots of Jammu & Kashmir, which has a rich and diverse musical tradition.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where NSS volunteers discussed the significance of music in their lives and how they could integrate it into their community service projects. The enthusiastic participation of the audience reflected a deep connection to the topic.
Dr. Rajeev Kumar, NSS Programme Officer at SMVDU, extended a vote of thanks to Dr. Bhushan for his enlightening discourse. He appreciated the relevance of the session, which not only educated the volunteers about music’s societal role but also inspired them to take up initiatives that preserve and promote the region’s cultural legacy. The event was seen as a resounding success, leaving the participants with a renewed sense of responsibility toward the preservation of India’s rich musical heritage.
