MEA calls for restraint, dialogue, diplomacy in West Asia

Issues travel advisory for Iran, Israel amid rising tensions

New Delhi, Oct 02: As violence escalates in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals, urging caution in countries like Iran and Israel. This comes in the wake of a major missile attack by Iran on Israel, which has significantly heightened tensions in the region.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. In a statement, Jaiswal said, “We are deeply concerned at the escalation of the security situation in West Asia and reiterate our call for restraint by all parties and protection of civilians. It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension, and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.”

Travel Advisory for Indian Nationals in Iran

The MEA is closely monitoring the evolving situation and has advised Indian citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran. Those already in Iran are urged to remain alert, stay connected with the Indian Embassy in Tehran, and follow local safety instructions. The embassy is prepared to assist Indian nationals in case of emergencies.

Similarly, the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv issued a travel advisory due to the escalating conflict. Indian citizens residing in Israel are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary movement, and remain close to safety shelters. The embassy reassured that it is in regular contact with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals.

Indian nationals in Israel are urged to register with the embassy if they haven’t already.

The recent tensions peaked on Tuesday when Iran launched 180 missiles targeting major Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. This attack followed the assassination of Hizbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israeli forces. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the missiles were aimed at military installations.

The missile strikes triggered emergency sirens across Israel, forcing millions into bomb shelters. Videos have surfaced showing an Israeli airbase being hit, although the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported successfully intercepting many of the missiles.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Iran had made a “big mistake” and vowed retaliation. Israel briefly closed its airspace but has since reopened it. The IDF has promised continued airstrikes in the region.

The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with Iran’s missile strike seen as retaliation for Nasrallah’s assassination. As the situation develops, Israel is preparing to respond, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.

Indian authorities and several other countries in the region are keeping a close watch on the situation.
