New Delhi: The assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday express deep concern and condemn the attack, even as the BJP attacked the Gandhi scion for “often encouraging and justifying violence against PM Modi”.

Former President Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening. Shots were fired towards the stage where Trump was speaking, apparently by a shooter who was on a building rooftop outside the rally venue. A bullet whizzed past Trump’s head as he was delivering a speech, leading to a bullet injury to his right ear. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service, while one participant at the event died of bullet injuries and another is critically ill.

Prime Minister Modi, in a post on X, strongly condemned the attack on “my friend” Donald Trump. The PM also said that violence has no place in politics and democracies.

“Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him speedy recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people,” the PM said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, in a post on X, said: “I am deeply concerned by the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump.”

“Such acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Wishing him a swift and complete recovery.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly condemned the attack on Trump.

“Deeply appalled by the attack on former US President Donald Trump.

“I strongly condemn this heinous act.

“Such violence has no place in any Democracy and civilized society.

“As India stands with the American people, we offer our deepest condolences the family of the deceased.”

However, BJP leaders Amit Malviya and Kapil Mishra attacked Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Congress leader of “creating the same hate-filled political environment in India”.

Mishra, who is Vice President of Delhi BJP, in a post on X, accused Rahul Gandhi of creating the same atmosphere in India with regard to PM Modi.

“Attack on Trump and lessons for India: What happened in USA today , Rahul Gandhi is creating same hate filled political environment in India

“When you hate and demonize someone, falsely accuse them of being a fascist, lie and say he’s a threat to democracy, you set the stage for sick people to commit acts of violence.

“The way Rahul Gandhi endorsed person throwing shoe in Varanasi is a clear case of promoting hate and violence against Modi ji.

“Rahul led Congress Party is creating a hate filled environment in India and is setting the stage for political violence and attacks

“Today’s attack on Trump should be a moment for Rahul Gandhi to sit back and think about stopping his hate filed politics.”

Malviya, in-charge of BJP’s National Information and Technology department and Member National Executive, in a post, termed Rahul Gandhi’s social media post of concern for Trump as “insincere words”.

“These are insincere words. Third Time Fail Rahul Gandhi has often encouraged and justified violence against Prime Minister Modi, who he has lost election to, several times now.

“How can India ever forget how Punjab Police, then under the Congress, deliberately compromised PM’s security, when his convoy was left stranded on a flyover.”
