Srinagar: Kashmir valley shivers as Srinagar recorded the season’s coldest night at -5.6°C on Sunday, freezing parts of Dal Lake and other water bodies.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the 2023–2024 season at -5.6°C, against the -5.4°C recorded a day ago. It was -3.7°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
Parts of iconic Dal Lake and other small water bodies were frozen due to the impact of the night temperature in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley on Sunday.
Interestingly, the maximum temperature was 6.2°C above the normal of 6.1°C, against 12.3°C recorded in Srinagar the previous day amid sun appearing during the day. The other stations in the Kashmir valley also witnessed 6°C above-normal day temperatures on Saturday.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of -5.0°C against the -4.6°C recorded the previous night, while Kokernag recorded at -2.7°C against the -2.9°C recorded a day ago.
The mercury at Pahalgam dipped to -6.5°C against -6.3°C on Saturday night. It was, however, 0.5°C above normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir.
Kupwara improved by a notch and recorded at -5.3°C against the -5.4°C recorded a day ago. It was 2.6°C below normal for the north Kashmir district.
There was also an improvement in the night temperature at Gulmarg by a notch, recorded at -4.4°C on Sunday against -4.5°C recorded the previous night. It was still 3.4°C above normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.
Kashmir weather, an independent observer, said that picturesque Sonamarg recorded a low of -5.6°C, Anantnag -6.5°C, Pulwama -6.7°C, and Shopian -6.9°C on Sunday.
The weather is likely to remain mainly dry today and generally cloudy over plains with the possibility of very light snow over isolated, extreme higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on January 9, the MeT office said, adding that from January 10–14, the weather will mainly be dry.
Overall, there is no significant weather activity till January 14, the MeT office said.
