Muharram procession carried out at Shamaswari, Gaw Kadal

Srinagar: Authorities on the second consecutive day on Saturday continued to impose restrictions in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of 13 Police Stations to thwart any ‘untoward incident’ during the Muharram procession.
Restrictions were imposed in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of including Batamaloo, Sherghari, Karan Nagar, Shaheed Gunj, Maisuma, Kralkhud, Kothibagh, Ram MunshiBagh (partly), Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, MR Gunj and Safakadal.
The officials said that restrictions would continue in these areas on Sunday as ‘precautionary measure’.
They said that restrictions were imposed today to thwart any ‘untoward incident’ during the Muharram procession, being carried out in old city here on every 9th of Muharram.
Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in large number here who had erected concertina wires on the roads which halted the vehicular as well as the pedestrian movement in the restriction bound areas.
Meanwhile, the Muharram procession was carried out in Old city here. A huge procession was carried out by the Shiite mourners from Shamaswari area of Srinagar, which ended at Baba pora areas of Habba Kadal.
The mourners wearing black clothes or badges were reciting ‘Nawah’.
Later in the afternoon, another Muharram procession was carried out in Gow Kadal area of Srinagar.
Witnesses said that the procession amid tight security started from Gow Kadal bridge and culminated at Basant Bagh area.
Mourners including women, men, children and old were seen wailing during the procession. They were also raising slogans in favor of Karbala martyrs.
As per the official announcement on Friday, the restrictions would continue on the third consecutive day on Sunday as ‘precautionary measure’.
On Sunday (10th Muharram), a Muharram procession is expected in Gulshan Bagh Bota Kadal to Zadibal area in which Shiite Muslims will participate and remember the sacrifices of Karbala martyrs.
A senior Police official informed KNS that the situation remained peaceful throughout the day. (KNS)
