Srinagar: Police in Budgam on Tuesday while responding to a distressing incident reported on 29th May about an act of sexual harassment against a young girl (identity withheld) arrested a person involved in the commission of crime. Earlier, the victim approached Soibug Police Post on the aforementioned date at 22:00 hours to file a written complaint detailing the events that unfolded.
In a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar Police said that as per victim’s statement on 25th May 2023, around 10 AM she had left for her coaching classes in Budgam and accepted a lift from an unknown vehicle near Soibugh along her journey. She in here statement further said that during the course of the trip, the driver subjected her to sexual harassment and after a strong resistance, she managed to escape, albeit leaving behind her mobile phone and school bag inside the vehicle.
Stating that while taking cognizance of the matter, Budgam Police immediately started investigating the incident thoroughly and through diligent efforts and resourceful investigative work, the accused individual involved in this deplorable act identified as Saqib Ahmad Dar, a resident of Narkara Budgam was promptly apprehended and the vehicle bearing registration number JK01N 5711, a Verna model involved in the incident was also seized.
Police in it’s above referred statement said that it is committed to ensure the safety and security of all individuals, particularly women and children and warned that it will strictly acts against the people indulging in these nefarious crimes under rules and also appealed people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or criminal activity immediately to their nearest police unit.
In the concluding para of it’s above quoted statement police extended its gratitude to the victim for displaying tremendous courage in coming forward and reporting the incident, adding therein that such a bravery is commendable and plays a vital role in upholding justice and safeguarding the community.
