Fresh snowfall ends prolonged dry spell in Kashmir

Srinagar: A fresh western disturbance is likely to cause widespread light to moderate snow in plains of Kashmir and rains in Jammu and moderate to heavy snowfall over middle and higher reaches on Sunday, Meteorological Centre Said.
The forecast of weather presently is generally cloudy at most places as a fresh WD is likely to affect J&K and adjoining areas from Sunday late afternoon, the MeT office said.
It said Under the influence of above system, Widespread light to Moderate Snow in plains/Rain( in Jammu) & moderate to heavy snowfall over middle reaches and higher reaches with heavy to very heavy over higher reaches of Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar etc. most likely during tonight to tomorrow afternoon and will gradual decrease thereafter.
The snowfall May cause Snow Avalanche in Avalanche prone areas and may affect Surface & Air transportation on January 30 besides cold effect power supply. People are advised NOT to venture out in Avalanche prone areas, unless in an emergency.
On January 31 the weather will remain Cloudy with Light Snow/Rain at isolated to Scattered places while from February 1st partly Cloudy weather is expected till evening of February 4.
The minimum temperature drop at most places of Kashmir valley with Srinagar had a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius against 1.7 degree Celsius. It was 1.4 degree below normal during this period of the season for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.6 degree Celsius against minus 6.9 degree Celsius. It was 0.5 degree below normal for the valley of shepherds during the period.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of minus 2.6 degree Celsius while Kokurnag had a low of minus 2.7 degree Celsius on Sunday.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir remained the coldest place in Kashmir valley and settled with minus 7.2 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Sunday. However, it was 0.3 degrees above normal for the famous ski resort.
Kupwara, the frontier Kashmir district had a low of minus 1.0 degree Celsius against minus 2.6 degree Celsius Saturday night, the MeT office said.
