Srinagar: Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Nilofer Khan on Monday inaugurated a three-day workshop on ‘Data Analytics Using SPSS and R (Qualitative and Quantitative)’ at the varsity’s main campus.

According to a statement issued from Center for Public Relations, University of Kashmir here, the workshop has been organised by the Department of Statistics. In her presidential address, Prof Nilofer highlighted the importance of correct data gathering, data analysis and data interpretation during the process of academic research to attain the desired research goals. She said no research outcome can be treated as accurate in absence of correct data analysis. She also said such training workshops must extend to research scholars from other faculties in future.

The Head Department of Statistics Prof Anwar Hassan said the workshop aims to improve research skills and competencies among researchers with hands-on training on R and SPSS using both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. He also highlighted the achievements of the department and the growing importance of statisticians in academia today.

On this occasion, Registrar DrNisar A Mir talked about the important role of statisticians in research and the University’s initiatives towards creating an enabling research environment across its campuses.

While speaking, Prof S N Dwivedi from Department of Bio-Statistics, AIIMS New Delhi, called for inculcating good practices among young researchers by encouraging them to go for “appropriate analysis” and “right interpretation” of data.  He said wrong data analysis will lead to “distorted implications” and therefore it is important to maintain the quality of data for right results.

In his address Prof Athar Ali Khan from Department of Statistics, AMU, also spoke on the theme of the workshop and its importance in the present era of multidisciplinary research.

In a concluding para of the above referred statement, Prof S K Sharma from Punjab University Chandigarh is the chief resource person for the workshop.
