Srinagar: Opposition, including National Conference (NC) and Congress, created ruckus in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and cornered the government over use of pellet guns and killing of civilians in security force action in the valley.
Immediately after the House assembled on the opening day of the special session called to debate on Goods and Services Tax (GST), NC and Congress legislators were on their feet, seeking answers to the alleged massive bloodshed in the valley.
The Opposition MLAs, who were wearing black band on their arms, were holding placards which read, “Stop state terrorism”, “Stop using pellet guns”, besides other slogans.
Shouting slogans against the PDP-BJP coalition government, the opposition members refused to resume their seats despite repeated direction from Speaker Kavinder Gupta.
While the Congress took a dig at the government over use of pellet guns on youth, including girls, NC MLA Devender Rana accused the Speaker of eroding the credibility of the House. “You are working on the behest of New Delhi to destroy the credibility of this House,” Mr Rana was heard saying in the House.
Mr Rana said that the opposition would not permit the Speaker to adjourn the Assembly sine die as it happened last time. “We will talk about the people and what you have done to them,” he shouted.
In an apparent jibe at state government, the Congress MLAs asked how can our daughters drive scooties and use laptops when you blind them with pellets.
The members from the opposition also sought inclusion of civilians and security force personnel killed during the last 48 hours in Kashmir in the obituary reference.
However, later the House took the obituary reference after about 20 minutes though noisy scenes were witnessed throughout the proceedings when members were speaking on obituary reference.
NC MLA Abdul Majeed Larmi, who was wearing a back band on his forehead, demanded an answer from the government over alleged vandalization of private property and thrashing of civilian, including women, by security forces in his Homeshalibugh constituency Friday this week.
However, after the Speaker didn’t allow his question, the MLA stormed into the well of the House and sat there during entire proceedings of the House. Later, after the concluding remakes by the Chief Minister, the Speaker assured member that the issue will be looked into.
After the completion of obituary reference to six members of the twin houses of the state Assembly, who died since the last session in the winter capital, Jammu, Assembly was Saturday adjourned sine die without discussing the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The members who died since last session included former Governor Garesh Chander Saxena, former Speaker Ali Mohammad Naik, former minister Sardar Rangil Singh, former MP Syed Nizamuddin Shah, former MLA Rishi Kumar Koshal and former MLA Shanti Devi.
