Srinagar/June,3: In a bid to foil a significant meeting called by Joint Resistance leadership at Hyderpora, police Monday placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest while they also detained Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik.
Authorities had also foiled a meeting of the Joint Resistance leadership last month and this time as well the close door meeting of these leaders was not allowed.
In wake of NIA raids, Joint Resistance leadership had called for a meeting to chalk out future strategy at the official residence of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani.
Witnesses said that a large contingent of police and para-military troopers had been deployed outside the residence of Geelani at Hyderpora and not a single activist was allowed to enter into Geelani’s home.
A statement issued by Hurriyat Conference (M) said that a meeting was to be held at Hyderpora today.
Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik were scheduled to attend the meeting following which the joint resistance leadership was planned to address a press conference.
“Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has once again been put under arrest since late yesterday evening. Mirwaiz was to attend the joint resistance meeting at veteran leader Syed Ali Geelani’s residence Monday and later address a joint press conference,” the statement said.
A JKLF spokesperson said that Muhammad Yasin Malik was detained from his Maisuma residence Monday morning.
Sources in Hurriyat Conference led by Geelani said that several of its members have been detained.
“Muhammad Ashraf Khan alias Sehrai, Imtiyaz Hyder, Muhammad Ashraf Laya, Umer Adil Dar and others have been detained,” a member of the Hurriyat Conference amalgam said on the condition of anonymity.
Pertinently, National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a “crackdown” on the residences of members of pro-freedom groups and some businessmen.
Since Saturday, the NIA raided at least twenty eight places across Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi and NCR. The places included those of Kashmiri businessmen as well.
