Srinagar| Nov, 07: From major healthcare infrastructure and heritage conservation to inclusive education, improved connectivity and community health outreach, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed several encouraging developments this week. Here are five noteworthy initiatives reflecting progress and opportunities across the Union Territory.
1. Kalhana’s Rajatarangini Enters UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Register: In a moment of international recognition for Kashmir’s rich intellectual and literary heritage, the 12th-century manuscript of Kalhana’sRajatarangini, preserved at the Oriental Research Library in Srinagar, has been inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register. The decision was taken at the 11th session of the regional register held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The chronicle, regarded as one of the earliest systematic historical accounts of the Indian subcontinent, documents Kashmir’s rulers, political developments, society and cultural traditions. The manuscript was included alongside the Mahabharata and Kautilya’s Arthashastra.
2. Around 30,000 Chinar Trees Geo-Tagged Across J&K: Jammu and Kashmir has geo-tagged around 30,000 Chinar trees and created a digital database to strengthen the conservation and monitoring of the iconic species. Officials informed Forests, Ecology and Environment Minister Altaf Ahmad Wani during a review meeting that QR-enabled metal identification plates had also been installed on 10,000 prominent Chinar trees in Kashmir and 3,500 Peepal and Bargad trees in the Jammu region. The QR-based system will allow people to access information about individual trees, including their location, age and health.
3. J&K Bank Announces 1,356 Vacancies, Opens New Employment Opportunities For Local Youth: Jammu and Kashmir Bank has announced a major recruitment drive for 1,356 posts of Probationary Officers and Banking Associates, opening fresh employment opportunities for eligible candidates from the Union Territory. The recruitment comprises 323 Probationary Officer posts and 1,033 Banking Associate posts in Jammu and Kashmir. Online applications opened on November 7 and will remain available until November 26, 2026. Graduates meeting the prescribed eligibility and age criteria, along with valid domicile requirements, can apply through the bank’s official website. The selection process will include examinations conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, with a multi-stage process for Probationary Officers.
4. Kishtwar Gets Country’s 183rd Seismological Observatory: Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the country’s 183rd seismological observatory in Kishtwar district, strengthening earthquake monitoring in the seismically sensitive Himalayan region. The facility is the fourth such observatory in Jammu and Kashmir and will provide round-the-clock monitoring of seismic activity in Kishtwar and adjoining areas.
5. J&K Introduces Three-Year Inspection Protection For Eligible Enterprises: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has notified a new framework under the Jammu and Kashmir Ease of Doing Business Act, 2026, allowing eligible enterprises to commence operations through self-declaration and obtain a Certificate of In-Principle Approval (CIPA). Under the framework, the certificate will remain valid for three years, during which businesses can establish, construct and operate while obtaining applicable regular approvals within the stipulated period. Eligible enterprises will also be protected from routine inspections during this period, subject to exceptions provided under the law. The certificate is to be issued within three working days for enterprises in approved industrial parks and within 30 days for those outside such parks, with deemed approval provisions in case of delays.
