Srinagar| Nov, 2 : The ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (ICAR-IGFRI) on Monday celebrated its 65th Foundation Day by hosting an Awareness-cum-Training Programme under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) in Aragam, Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir, in partnership with the Himalayan Pastoral Trust.

The event engaged 52 tribal farmers, including 10 women, with the objective of enhancing fodder security, improving livestock health, and fostering sustainable livelihoods within tribal communities. During the programme, participants received seeds of tall fescue, rooted slips of Phalaris, deworming medicines, and calcium supplements aimed at promoting perennial fodder cultivation and boosting livestock productivity. Technical sessions addressed improved management practices for perennial grasses, scientific fodder production methods, livestock nutrition and health management, and the critical role of youth in strengthening tribal livelihoods. The discussions underscored the sustainable use of grassland resources and the need for quality fodder to support livestock-based economies. This initiative reaffirmed ICAR-IGFRI’s dedication to delivering location-specific fodder technologies to tribal and pastoral communities, particularly in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region. The collaboration with the Himalayan Pastoral Trust emphasized the significance of institutional partnerships and community involvement in advancing sustainable grassland management and livelihood security. The event served as a platform to reinforce the Institute’s commitment to research, technology dissemination, and the inclusive development of farming and pastoral communities, aligning with the overarching vision of sustainable agriculture and rural prosperity.
