Dr G M Bhat stresses soil health and protection of agricultural land

Kupwara, : The Khet Bachao Abhiyan in Kupwara conducted awareness programs on Wednesday and Thursday this week with focuson sustainable agricultural practices.

Organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), the initiatives aimed to educate farmers on the importance of protecting cultivable land, minimizing reliance on chemical fertilizers, and adopting safer plant protection methods. Prof. Dr. G. M. Bhat, Head of KVK Kupwara, emphasized the transition towards natural and organic farming, highlighting the significance of enhancing soil health through practices such as composting and the use of farmyard manure. Dr. Bhat cautioned against the indiscriminate use of pesticides and fungicides, noting that improper application could adversely affect soil health, beneficial organisms, and human well-being. He advised farmers to apply plant protection chemicals judiciously, adhere to recommended dosages, observe waiting periods before harvesting, and seek expert guidance. The programs also stressed the importance of maintaining agricultural land productivity year-round through crop rotations and the cultivation of seasonal vegetables, pulses, and fodder. Technical discussions led by experts addressed scientific farming practices, soil fertility management, and responsible agricultural input usage. The scientists encouraged ongoing communication between farmers and agricultural experts to ensure practices are tailored to local conditions. The interactive sessions allowed farmers to voice their challenges and explore methods to enhance productivity while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The overarching goal of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan is to promote the conservation and productive use of agricultural land, urging farmers to engage actively in the campaign and advocate for soil, water, and biodiversity conservation. The programs concluded with a strong message to protect cultivable land, maintain soil fertility, and reduce unnecessary chemical inputs to foster sustainable agriculture and ensure long-term food security.
