Srinagar : In a major push toward agricultural sustainability and self-reliance in edible oil production, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Srinagar, under the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), organized a dynamic twin-impact drive in Khunmoh on Thursday.
Under the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLD) programme, KVK Srinagar distributed high-yielding agricultural inputs and seeds to local farmers to boost crop productivity and curb dependence on edible oil imports. The initiative promoted SS-4 (Shalimar Sarson-4)—an advanced mustard variety developed by SKUAST-Kashmir engineered to bridge yield gaps—alongside scientific cultivation practices, balanced nutrient management, and integrated pest management. The distribution was spearheaded by Dr. Shamim A. Simnani, Professor and Head of KVK Srinagar, together with team scientists Dr. Rukhsar, Dr. Haseeb, and Dr. Owais Bashir.
Simultaneously, KVK Srinagar launched the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ at Khunmoh, joining the nationwide soil conservation movement spearheaded by Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Rewari, Haryana. The campaign focused on safeguarding long-term soil health through soil-test-based nutrient management, boosting beneficial microbial activity, and minimizing nutrient imbalances to reduce residual toxicity risks. Together, these combined initiatives mark a decisive step toward fostering sustainable agriculture, securing higher oilseed output, and bolstering national food security.
