Srinagar, Oct 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has opposed the J&K Waqf Board’s move to introduce uniform Friday sermons across mosques in the Union Territory, alleging that the initiative amounts to interference in the religious affairs of Muslims.
In a post on X, Omar termed the move unacceptable and demanded that the Waqf Board chairperson immediately halt the initiative.
“This is an unacceptable attempt by the BJP to interfere in the religious affairs of Muslims and will not be accepted under any circumstances,” Omar said.
He further said the BJP-appointed chairperson must immediately stop what he described as a misplaced attempt to please her masters.
The J&K Waqf Board has proposed uniform Friday sermons at mosques across the Union Territory, with the topics to be highlighted at religious places decided in advance and approved by a committee of preachers.
If implemented, Jammu and Kashmir would become the first region in the country to adopt such a mechanism, according to the proposal.
