Says “UT moving towards job-oriented education, 1.54 lakh students pursuing skill courses”

Sopore : Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Department J&K, Ram Niwas Sharma, on Monday said that rules governing establishment of private universities in Jammu and Kashmir are awaiting approval from the competent authority.

Talking to reporters here in Sopore Sharma said, “The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed the relevant Act in April this year. These rules have been submitted for approval and are likely to be finalized any time. We are awaiting approval from the competent authority.”

Sharma said: “The moment we have the rules in place, I expect investment not only from the country but across international boundaries, and people will come and have private universities in Jammu and Kashmir.”

On making education more job oriented, Sharma said the government was moving rapidly towards skill-based education. “It’s the need of the hour. We are moving very fast in that direction and it is the need of the time,” he said.

The HED Secretary said:  “As on date, we have 1,54000 students who are attending different skill courses across J&K, and most of the university and college courses do have skill courses in their curriculum.”

He said the integration of skill components into higher education courses was part of the broader effort to align education with employment opportunities and the changing requirements of the job market
