Shopian : Police on Saturday arrested a man in Shopian for allegedly impersonating a Deputy Commissioner’s office employee and cheating the family of a cancer patient of ₹9,999 under the pretext of facilitating financial aid.

In a statement issued here on Saturday Police said that the action was initiated after receiving a complaint on the CUG mobile of Police Station Shopian from one Farooq Ahmad Sofi, R/O Manghama. Sofi had published a social media appeal seeking financial assistance for his son’s cancer treatment. The accused, identified as Umar Shameem Ganie, R/O Memander, Shopian, allegedly took money from the complainant and later manhandled, intimidated, and threatened him when confronted in the Shopian market. An e-FIR has been registered, and preliminary investigation revealed his involvement in similar fraudulent activities against other victims.
