Srinagar, Sep 25 (UNI) Congress legislators on Friday staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with CPI(M) MLA M.Y. Tarigami extending support to the protesting members.
The Congress MLAs entered the well of the House carrying banners raising their demand, prompting Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to object to the display of the placards.
Rather told the members that the Election Commission of India was not under the control of the Assembly and asked them to return to their seats.
The protest came shortly after Question Hour commenced. The Congress legislators again trooped into the well with banners, disrupting proceedings.
“Before I take action against you,” the Speaker warned the protesting members, asking them to resume their seats.
Following the intervention, the Congress legislators returned to their places, allowing Question Hour to continue.
The protest comes amid the Congress’s demand for accountability from the Election Commission and its chief, with the issue spilling into proceedings of the J&K Assembly.
