14-inch Celestron telescope with advanced imaging systems to support astronomy learning, research and outreach
Srinagar : The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has inaugurated its Observatory for Astronomy and Astrophysics (NSOAA), a significant addition aimed at enhancing observational astronomy, astrophysics research, student training, and public outreach.
The inauguration was led by Director Prof. Anurag Misra and attended by various dignitaries, faculty, researchers, and students. The observatory features a 14-inch Celestron C14 EdgeHD telescope, equipped with advanced imaging systems, enabling detailed observations of celestial bodies such as the Moon, planets, and distant galaxies. Prof. Misra emphasized the observatory’s role in bridging classroom learning with scientific exploration, providing students with hands-on opportunities to engage in astronomical data collection and analysis. He expressed hopes that NSOAA would foster collaboration with educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir. Registrar Prof. Nasir Iqbal highlighted the importance of modern scientific infrastructure in inspiring young students to delve into various scientific disciplines, particularly through the collaborative nature of astronomy. The observatory’s development involved collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), with Dr. Niruj Mohan Ramanujam serving as an advisor. He noted that the observatory could enhance accessibility to astronomy for students and the community, transforming it into a hub for education and engagement. The initiative was spearheaded by Prof. Prince Ahmad Ganai, who articulated the vision of establishing NIT Srinagar as a center for astronomical learning and outreach. The Observatory Committee, comprising faculty from various engineering and science departments, underscored the interdisciplinary effort required to realize this project. Prof. G. A. Harmain remarked on the collaborative nature of the initiative, while Dr. Harkirat Singh acknowledged the contributions of all involved in bringing the observatory to fruition. Overall, the NSOAA is positioned to significantly enrich the academic and research landscape at NIT Srinagar.
