September 23: In a move aimed at safeguarding tourists from overcharging and ensuring adherence to the government-prescribed fare structure, J&K Police has registered an FIR against a commercial passenger vehicle found charging tourists an amount double the prescribed fare on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg route.
During checking, a Scorpio vehicle bearing registration number JK05N-6166 was found charging ₹5,000 from tourists for the Tangmarg–Gulmarg journey, against the government-prescribed fare cap of ₹2,500. Police Station Tangmarg registered an FIR under relevant provisions pertaining to cheating, and further investigation is underway.
J&K Police in Baramulla has issued a clear message to drivers and commercial transport operators that overcharging, harassment or exploitation of tourists will not be permitted under any circumstances. Operators are required to strictly follow the prescribed fare structure and deal with tourists fairly and transparently. Any violation noticed during checking or reported by tourists will be dealt with strictly in accordance with law. The action also comes as an assurance to tourists and visitors that their safety, convenience and right to fair fares remain a priority. Tourists are encouraged to report overcharging or harassment to the Police so that timely intervention and legal action can be ensured.
Police appeals to all commercial transport operators to uphold professional conduct and contribute towards a safe, fair and welcoming environment for tourists visiting the district.
