NIT Srinagar set to become first NIT with dedicated campus observatory
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsappTelegramEmail

Srinagar, | Sept: 21: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar is poised to inaugurate the country’s first dedicated campus-based observatory, the Observatory for Astronomy and Astrophysics (NSOAA), featuring a high-performance 14-inch aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.

The initiative represents a significant advancement in astronomy education, research, and public outreach at the institute. The telescope, a Celestron C14 EdgeHD, is designed for high-quality astrophotography and planetary observations, supported by advanced imaging equipment including planetary and cooled deep-sky cameras. Developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, the observatory aims to provide students and researchers with direct access to observational astronomy. It is intended to enhance the educational experience by allowing students to engage with astronomical data and scientific inquiry beyond theoretical learning.

The project is led by Professor Prince Ahmad Ganai, who emphasizes the observatory’s role as a center for experiential science education and outreach, fostering a culture of astronomy in Jammu and Kashmir. The facility is expected to serve as a regional hub, connecting educational institutions across the area and facilitating various programs such as sky observation sessions, workshops, and teacher training. NIT Srinagar is also planning to introduce a hands-on course in Astronomy and Astrophysics, further promoting engagement with the field. This development positions NIT Srinagar among a select group of Indian technical institutions with significant astronomical observatories on campus, enhancing its educational offerings and outreach capabilities.
