Srinagar, Sept 21: CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami on Monday called for greater accountability of the government, saying Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly is an important mechanism to raise issues concerning the people and hold the administration accountable.
Speaking to reporters after the Legislative Assembly was adjourned,, Tarigami said raising questions by opposition members was their right, but stressed that accountability should extend to the Central Government as well.
“Question Hour is an important means for members to ask questions and hold the administration and the government accountable. This is generally the case, whether it is Parliament or Assemblies,” Tarigami said.
Referring to questions raised by BJP members of the opposition, he said, “Raising questions is not a crime; it is their right.” However, he said he had his own objection regarding the manner in which Question Hour was being conducted.
Tarigami also reminded the Central Government of its earlier promise regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
“Two years ago, while making its election promises, it was said that elections would be held and statehood would be restored. Two years have passed,” he said.
He said the issue was not limited to the empowerment of the Cabinet, arguing that the legislature had not enjoyed the same authority since Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory.
“The rights of our people, our ordinary citizens, have been curtailed, and arbitrary decision-making has increased since then in this Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” Tarigami said.
He said the Central Government should also be reminded of its commitments and held accountable for implementing the promises made to the people.
“Making a promise is one thing, but they must also learn to act on and fulfil the promises they make. It has been two years. We are waiting,” he said.
