• ‘Drug abuse threatens families and future of younger generation’
• University students asked to counter misconceptions and support victims
• Stresses awareness, family support and rehabilitation for lasting change
Srinagar | Sept, 18: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday launched a documentary and collage exhibition at the University of Jammu as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, highlighting the challenges posed by drug abuse and efforts towards prevention, awareness and rehabilitation.
Sinha commended the University of Jammu for engaging students and faculty in raising awareness about drug abuse and promoting a collective response to the issue.
Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said drug abuse poses a serious challenge to families and the younger generation and stressed the need to address both drug trafficking networks and substance abuse.
He recalled the launch of the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir campaign in 2020 and said the 100-day Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan launched in April this year expanded the campaign to villages, schools, universities and families through awareness drives, padyatras and administrative measures.
He highlighted a three-pronged approach focusing on dismantling drug supply chains, generating awareness and rehabilitating affected persons. He also referred to the Rehabilitation and Socio-Economic Reintegration Scheme for Drug Abuse Victims, 2026, aimed at supporting the reintegration of affected youth into society.
“Education, awareness and compassion are our strongest weapons. Let us pledge to protect our youth, empower society, and build a healthier future,” Sinha said.
The Lieutenant Governor urged students to act as messengers and participants in the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir campaign by engaging with their peers, addressing misconceptions and supporting those affected by addiction.
He also called for the documentary to be screened across departments of the University of Jammu and in other educational institutions in the Jammu division to expand awareness among students and the wider community.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, Dean Academic Affairs Prof J.P. Singh Joorel, Dean Research Studies Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Planning and Development Prof Sangita Gupta, Registrar Dr Neeraj Sharma, heads of departments, faculty members and students attended the programme.
