The Prime Minister also remembered Visvesvaraya, whose pioneering work in engineering, public infrastructure and nation-building continues to inspire generations of Indians.
“Tributes to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose engineering genius and nation-building vision continue to inspire,” Modi said.
Engineers’ Day is observed in India every year on September 15 to mark the birth anniversary of Visvesvaraya, who was born on September 15, 1861, in Karnataka. Widely regarded as one of India’s foremost engineers, he made significant contributions to irrigation, water supply, flood protection and infrastructure development and subsequently served as the Diwan of the erstwhile Mysore State.
Visvesvaraya was also a strong advocate of industrialisation, education and technological advancement, and his work helped lay important foundations for modern infrastructure and public engineering in India. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, in 1955.
Modi’s Engineers’ Day message comes against the backdrop of India’s increasing emphasis on engineering, technology and innovation as drivers of economic growth and development. Engineers have been central to the country’s expansion of physical infrastructure as well as advances in digital technology, manufacturing, space exploration and emerging technological fields.
By invoking Visvesvaraya’s legacy, the Prime Minister underlined the enduring importance of engineering not merely as a technical discipline but as an instrument of innovation, public service and nation-building. The tribute also highlighted the role of engineers in translating technological expertise and new ideas into solutions aimed at strengthening India’s development journey.
