Srinagar | September, 14: Jammu and Kashmir is expected to experience a relatively mild and dry winter under the influence of El Niño, though one or two major snowfall spells remain possible, according to Meteorological Department Director Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad. Dismissing unscientific social media claims that winter would not occur, officials said winter intensity varies naturally. WMO indicators suggest warmer and drier conditions during late 2026 and early 2027, though dynamic atmospheric shifts could still bring heavy snow if strong Western Disturbances hit the region.
Warmer Himalayan temperatures are altering precipitation timing, reducing peak winter snow cover essential for glacier recharge. While current seasonal precipitation remains near normal due to a 35 percent rainfall surplus in July offsetting an August deficit, experts stress that timely snowfall remains critical for regional water security.
