Srinagar, Sep 14: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has written to Health Minister Sakina Itoo, raising concerns over the disparity in stipends received by postgraduate residents at Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) Jammu & Kashmir compared with residents at SKIMS and in other states.
AIMSA questioned why such a disparity exists when postgraduate residents across these institutions perform similar clinical duties and provide frontline healthcare services.
The issue has gained further attention after Bihar revised its postgraduate resident stipends, while J&K continues to lag behind several other states.
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, President AIMSA J&K, said, “There should be no disparity among postgraduate residents. Doctors performing similar responsibilities and serving patients should receive fair and equitable compensation. The government must address this anomaly without further delay.”
Dr Mohit Choudhary, Chief Advisor, AIMSA, and Postgraduate Resident at GMC Srinagar, said, “Our government should take immediate steps to resolve this disparity. PG residents are working continuously on the frontline of healthcare, and their compensation should reflect their responsibilities and workload.”
AIMSA has urged the J&K Government to review the existing PG stipend structure, rectify the disparity with SKIMS and other states, and ensure fair, equitable and regularly revised stipends for postgraduate residents across J&K.(GNS)
