Srinagar, Sept. 7: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday inaugurated the first-ever International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) in Srinagar, marking what he described as the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s rich and enduring relationship with cinema.
The inaugural edition of the festival has brought together filmmakers from over 30 countries, with more than 130 films being screened during the event. The festival aims to celebrate cinematic excellence while showcasing Jammu & Kashmir as an emerging destination for global filmmaking and cultural exchange.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the festival reflects Jammu & Kashmir’s growing aspirations to become an international hub for the creative arts.
“With filmmakers from across the world participating and an impressive lineup of films, IFFJK brings the world of cinema to Kashmir and places Jammu & Kashmir firmly on the global creative map,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that the festival is more than a cultural event, calling it “a declaration of Jammu & Kashmir’s intent to emerge as a vibrant home for filmmakers, storytellers and creative talent from across the world.”
He expressed hope that the festival would encourage greater collaboration between local and international filmmakers, create opportunities for young talent, and further strengthen the region’s position as a preferred destination for film production and creative industries.
The festival is expected to feature film screenings, interactive sessions, workshops and discussions involving acclaimed filmmakers, industry professionals and emerging artists from India and abroad.
