Facility is fourth Post Office Passport Seva Kendra under RPO Srinagar, 457th in the country

Kargil : The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in association with the Department of Posts, on Wednesday inaugurated a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at the Sub Post Office in Kargil, expanding access to passport-related services for residents of the region.

The facility was inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh in the presence of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa, Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, senior officials and other dignitaries.

The Kargil facility is the fourth POPSK under the Regional Passport Office (RPO) Srinagar and the 457th such centre in the country.

The inauguration marks another step towards expanding passport infrastructure to remote and underserved areas. Under the Passport Seva Programme, the Ministry of External Affairs has established at least one Passport Seva Kendra or POPSK in each Lok Sabha constituency under the jurisdiction of RPO Srinagar.

Addressing the gathering, Kirti Vardhan Singh said the opening of the Kargil POPSK was an important part of the ongoing expansion of the Passport Seva Programme, aimed at making passport services more accessible, citizen-centric and efficient.

He said the initiative was being implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with emphasis on strengthening public service delivery and taking essential services closer to citizens.

The new POPSK is expected to significantly benefit residents of Kargil and adjoining areas by reducing the need to travel long distances for passport-related services. The facility will help applicants save both time and travel costs while improving the overall convenience of the application process.

The establishment of the centre is particularly significant for residents of the Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency, where geographical distances and difficult terrain can make access to essential government services challenging.

Applicants can book appointments for passport services online through the official Passport Seva portal, following which they can visit the Kargil POPSK for the required procedures.

The inauguration of the facility is expected to further strengthen citizen-centric service delivery and bring passport services closer to residents of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
