Nepal’s Disaster: A Wake-Up Call For Kashmir

The images coming out of Nepal on social media are horrifying. A wall of water rushing through a mountain valley. Roads disappearing. Bridges collapsing. Homes, vehicles and everything in the path of the torrent being swept away within moments. Watching such scenes is frightening—but beyond the fear lies a serious question: what can a disaster of this intensity teach a Himalayan region like Kashmir? The August 26 catastrophe in Nepal has once again shown the terrifying power of a Himalayan disaster. Reports indicate hundreds of deaths and more than 1,300 people missing, while roads, bridges, settlements, hydropower infrastructure and other facilities have suffered extensive damage. Rescue efforts have been complicated by destroyed roads and extremely difficult mountain terrain.
The immediate trigger appears to have involved a glacier/ice-and-rock collapse followed by a massive debris flow and sudden flood surge. But nature rarely follows a single cause. Geological instability, precipitation, snow and ice conditions, steep terrain and river dynamics may all have contributed.
It would therefore be wrong to blame the catastrophe solely on climate change. But it would be equally unwise to rule climate change out.
A warming climate is transforming the Himalayan cryosphere—glaciers, snow and frozen mountain environments. Changing temperatures and precipitation patterns can alter the stability of these fragile systems and potentially increase the risk of cascading hazards.
A Warning Written in Water: Climate change is affecting the entire planet, but the Himalayas are particularly sensitive. Here, glaciers feed rivers, mountains hold unstable slopes, and communities live along narrow valleys. A disturbance high above can rapidly become a disaster far below. A glacier-related collapse can generate a debris flow. A landslide can block a river.
A temporary natural dam can suddenly fail. A cloudburst can turn a stream into a destructive torrent. One hazard can trigger another—and the final disaster can be far larger than the original event. Kashmir Should Not Look Away. Nepal may be far away, but the lesson is close to home. Kashmir is also a Himalayan region. Our mountains contain glaciers and snowfields, steep slopes, rivers and fragile ecosystems. The region has already experienced cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and changing patterns of snowfall and precipitation. No one can say that Nepal’s catastrophe will happen in Kashmir. Different valleys have different geological and climatic conditions. But we should not wait for an identical disaster before taking Himalayan risks seriously. Nepal is a warning not a prediction.

“While scientists debate the exact causes, the environmental risks facing the fragile Himalayas demand immediate action. Rather than waiting for the next disaster, regions like Kashmir must learn from Nepal by monitoring, understanding, and proactively preparing for mountain-related hazards.”

Watch The Glaciers Before The Waters Rise: Kashmir needs stronger scientific surveillance of its glaciers and vulnerable high-altitude areas.
The government should make greater use of satellite imagery, drones and ground-based monitoring to track glacier retreat, snow and ice conditions, glacial lakes, unstable slopes and changes in water systems. Satellites can monitor enormous and inaccessible mountain areas. Drones can provide detailed information from particularly vulnerable locations. Ground observations can verify changes and provide essential local data. Most importantly, these observations should be connected to effective early-warning systems.
If a dangerous glacial lake is expanding, a slope is becoming unstable or an unusual rise in water levels is detected, communities downstream should receive warnings immediately. Technology cannot prevent a glacier from collapsing. But it can give people something precious: time. And sometimes, a few hours or even minutes can save lives.
Government Action Must Meet Community Action. Government preparedness is essential, but disaster resilience cannot be built by government alone. Communities living near rivers and vulnerable slopes must know evacuation routes and emergency procedures. Construction in natural drainage channels and highly exposed areas requires greater caution. Forests, wetlands, springs and natural watercourses must also be protected because healthy ecosystems can provide an important buffer against environmental hazards. And our schools must become centres of climate preparedness. Climate education should not stop with definitions of greenhouse gases and global warming. Students should understand the climate risks surrounding their own communities: What is happening to our glaciers?
Why are cloudbursts dangerous? How can a landslide trigger a flash flood?
What does an early-warning message mean? Where should we go when the warning comes? That is the difference between knowing about climate change and being prepared for it.
From Fear To Preparedness: The Nepal images frightened me. They should make us thoughtful but not helpless. We cannot prevent every cloudburst, landslide, avalanche or glacier-related event. We cannot control the global climate overnight. But we can monitor better, warn earlier, build wisely, educate our children and prepare our communities. The Himalayas are changing. Whether every change is directly caused by climate change is a question for scientists to investigate. But the risks associated with a changing and fragile Himalayan environment are real enough to demand action. The lesson from Nepal is simple: we should not wait for the next torrent to teach us what preparedness means. For Kashmir, the choice is before us: Fear the mountains or understand them, monitor them and prepare for them.
The wiser choice is obvious.
