Srinagar : The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has achieved a significant milestone by securing official recognition for the Kashmir Pony as a new indigenous horse breed from the ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR).
The recognition was granted during the ICAR Breed Registration Committee’s 14th meeting on August 7, 2026, designating Jammu & Kashmir as the breed’s home tract and assigning it the accession number INDIA_HORSE_0700_KASHMIRI_07009. The successful registration was led by Dr. Syed Shanaz, along with a dedicated research team that included Dr. Muzamil Abdullah, Dr. Akeel Yousuf Wani, Dr. Nazish Rizwan, and Dr. Khushboo Javaid. Their efforts were supported by the ICAR-NBAGR, particularly through the guidance of Dr. A.K. Mishra, and were further bolstered by collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department. This achievement not only highlights the importance of scientific documentation and conservation of Kashmir’s unique animal genetic resources but also paves the way for the sustainable utilization and future livelihood potential of the Kashmir Pony.
