Sat Sharma urges National Conference to preserve parliamentary conventions by yielding the statutory post to the main opposition party.
Srinagar : Ahead of the Legislative Assembly’s upcoming autumn session, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State President Sat Pal Sharma urged the ruling coalition to assign the Deputy Speaker seat to the opposition.
Talking to reporters Sharma cited parliamentary precedence, pointing out that during the PDP-BJP administration, Nazir Gurezi of the National Conference held the post, while PDP’s Sartaj Madni filled the role under previous NC-Congress rule. “As per convention, the post of Deputy Speaker is allotted to the opposition,” Sharma stated, adding that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should have accommodated this tradition during the Speaker’s election. The statutory post has remained vacant for nearly two years.
