Jammu: A public delegation from Punjab, led by Ajnala MLA S. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and raised concerns over recurring monsoon overflows from the Ujh River affecting parts of Punjab.
The delegation requested the Lieutenant Governor to take up the matter with the Prime Minister and Union Minister for Jal Shakti for construction of a suitable dam or reservoir on the Ujh, or any other technically feasible flood-mitigation measure, following a comprehensive feasibility study and preparation of a Detailed Project Report.
The delegation said such an intervention could help regulate the river’s flow and mitigate flooding in Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts, particularly Ajnala subdivision.
It also highlighted the potential for storing excess monsoon water for future use, besides possibilities for hydropower generation, tourism, water sports and recreational activities.
The Lieutenant Governor assured the delegation that the matter would be given due consideration and taken up with the concerned authorities for technical evaluation.
