New Delhi :  Northern Railway has distributed 123 Jyoti AI Smart Glasses among its visually impaired employees as part of an initiative aimed at promoting workplace accessibility, independence and greater efficiency.

The smart glasses, developed by Torch It as a Make in India initiative, were distributed by Northern Railway General Manager Rajesh Kumar Pandey at the National Rail Museum, Chanakyapuri, in line with the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwBD) Act, 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, Pandey said the initiative would provide visually impaired railway employees with access to modern technology to help them perform their official duties with greater ease and confidence.

He said 123 visually impaired employees of Northern Railway would benefit from the initiative. In the first phase, smart glasses were distributed to 16 visually impaired employees at the railway headquarters.

According to Northern Railway, the AI-enabled glasses are intended to support employees not only in the workplace but also in their day-to-day activities, thereby enhancing their independence and confidence.

The event was attended by Additional General Manager, Northern Railway, Harsh Khare; Principal Chief Personnel Officer Sujit Kumar Mishra; all Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs); and representatives of recognised unions and associations of Northern Railway.

During the programme, visually impaired employees who received the Jyoti AI Smart Glasses shared their experiences and highlighted the usefulness of the technology in making their work-related activities easier and more accessible.

Northern Railway said the feedback from employees was overwhelmingly positive, with beneficiaries underlining the practical utility of the smart glasses.

The 123 smart glasses have been distributed across Northern Railway as follows: Headquarters 17, Delhi Division 28, Lucknow Division 13, Ambala Division 10, Moradabad Division 19, Firozpur Division 5, Alambagh Workshop 19, Jagadhri Workshop 3 and Charbagh Workshop 9.

The railway said the initiative reflects its commitment to creating an inclusive workplace and ensuring that employees with disabilities have access to appropriate technological tools to perform their responsibilities effectively.

The initiative is also expected to demonstrate how emerging technologies can be leveraged to empower persons with disabilities and promote greater participation and independence in the workplace.
