New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday described Jammu and Kashmir’s Independence Day celebrations as a symbol of the transformation witnessed in the Union Territory, saying J&K has “charted a journey from fear to freedom” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
In a post on X, Shah said areas where hoisting the Tricolour once invited threats now witness Tiranga Yatras, with people participating in celebrations with “joy and pride.” He said the widespread participation in Independence Day celebrations reflected the changes witnessed in J&K in recent years, with people displaying the National Flag without fear.
Mass participation in Har GharTiranga: J&K is witnessing large public participation in the Har GharTiranga Campaign 2026, being held from August 9 to 17 to mark the 80th Independence Day. The campaign also coincides with the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of VandeMataram. More than 14 lakh National Flags have been distributed across all 20 districts to encourage public participation.
Tiranga rallies across Srinagar: On August 12, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha led a Tiranga rally from SKICC to the Botanical Garden in Srinagar. A Tiranga Shikara Rally was also held on Dal Lake, featuring around 250 decorated boats. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other senior leaders participated in the celebrations. The week-long campaign includes programmes across J&K, with citizens, government departments and organisations participating and being encouraged to display the Tricolour at homes and workplaces.
