Kishtwar, Aug 15: At least five people were killed after a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle skidded off the road and rolled into the Chenab River in the Dachhan area of Kishtwar district on Saturday, officials said.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the accident occurred in the morning when the vehicle, bearing registration number HR29AG-0648, was travelling from Yainwan, Dangdaroo, towards Sounder and skidded off the road before plunging into the Chenab River.
He said a police team, along with local residents, soon reached the spot and launched rescue and recovery operations.
The official said five bodies have so far been recovered from the accident site, while the exact number of people travelling in the vehicle remains unclear. The identities of the deceased and other details are being ascertained.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident, while rescue and recovery operations are underway.—(KNO)
