New Delhi, Aug 9 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement, recalling their courage and determination in India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi said the sacrifices and resolve of those who took part in the movement would continue to inspire generations of Indians.
“Remembering all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement. Their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian,” the Prime Minister said.
Recalling the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the movement, Modi said, “Inspired by the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi Ji, the clarion call of Quit India infused new energy into our freedom struggle and reflected the unwavering determination of our people to break free from colonial rule.”
The Quit India Movement was launched on August 8, 1942, following the passage of the Quit India resolution by the All India Congress Committee in Bombay, with Gandhi giving the historic call of “Do or Die”. The movement marked one of the most significant mass mobilisations against British rule, with people across the country participating in protests, strikes and acts of resistance despite a sweeping crackdown by the colonial authorities.
The British government responded by arresting Gandhi and several other senior Congress leaders soon after the movement was launched. Despite the leadership being detained, the agitation continued through widespread participation by students, workers, peasants and ordinary citizens.
The movement became a defining episode in the final phase of India’s freedom struggle and demonstrated the growing demand for an end to British rule. India eventually achieved independence on August 15, 1947, after decades of political mobilisation and resistance against colonial rule.
Modi’s tribute came on the occasion of the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, with the Prime Minister highlighting the movement’s enduring significance and the courage of those who contributed to the country’s freedom struggle.
