Srinagar : The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, on Friday celebrated National Handloom Day by organising an exhibition of high-value handcrafted textile products at SK Park in Srinagar, showcasing the work of artisans and weavers from across the Valley.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mussarat Islam, who urged buyers and tourists to support the ‘Be Vocal for Local’ campaign and purchase QR-coded GI-certified products to safeguard genuine Kashmiri crafts from counterfeit products.
He also stressed the importance of quality certification, GI labelling and aesthetic packaging of premium Pashmina and Kani shawls to enhance their market value. The department said capacity-building workshops on packaging would soon be organised in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Packaging, New Delhi. The event also highlighted Srinagar’s recognition as a World Craft Council Craft City and a UNESCO Creative City.
