Jammu :A couple was swept away by a sudden flash flood while attempting to cross the Kaghote nallah in Udhampur district on Friday.
Officials identified the victims as 58-year-old Baldev Kumar and his 53-year-old wife, Maya Devi, residents of Kaghote village. A joint search and rescue operation launched by the police and local residents recovered one body by the evening, while efforts to locate the missing person remain underway.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory predicting a heavy wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir from August 9 to 11. Forecasters warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Jammu division alongside intense showers in Kashmir, threatening potential flash floods, landslides, and severe waterlogging. “Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flashfloods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause water logging in low lying areas,” the MeT stated, urging the public to avoid nallahs and landslide-prone spots while instructing authorities to maintain high alert. Temperatures remained mostly below normal across the region, with Srinagar recording 28.5°C and Jammu hitting 33.7°C.
