Srinagar : The Field Day-cum-Fruit Show organized by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) at the Ambri Apple Research Centre focused on the conservation of the Ambri apple, scientific orchard management, and mechanization.
The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganie, who emphasized the importance of high-quality apple production for export. Dr. Hamidullah, Senior Scientist at AARC, provided insights into the Centre’s research and extension activities, while Director Extension Dr. Raihana Habib Kanth advocated for modern technologies and practices to enhance productivity in apple orchards. The advantages of High-Density Plantation systems were discussed by Dr. Ashiq Hussain Pandith, who outlined strategies for their adoption among growers. A significant highlight was a live demonstration of orchard mechanization by Dr. Tariq Rasool, showcasing automated mist sprayers that improve efficiency and reduce pesticide use. Agricultural writer Mr. Arjimand Hussain Talib called for a “Virasat Revival” program to conserve indigenous apple cultivars, particularly the Ambri apple. The event also featured a Fruit Show displaying elite apple cultivars and technical literature developed by SKUAST-K. An interactive session allowed farmers to engage with experts on various topics, reinforcing the connection between research and practical horticultural applications.
