The monsoon has always been the lifeblood of India’s agriculture, economy and water security. But recent weather patterns have shown a worrying trend, the monsoon is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Although forecasts had indicated that the developing El Nino would weaken the monsoon, some regions of India received normal to above normal rainfall in July 2026. The surprise change has rekindled the debate among scientists and policy makers on the increased impact of climate change on the weather systems of India. El Nino has been considered for decades as one of the strongest determinants of India’s monsoon performance. El Nino years are usually associated with below average rainfall leading to drought, reduced agricultural output and water shortages. But this year’s rain patterns have upset that assumption.
Experts say global warming is affecting atmospheric circulation patterns, and the relationship between El Nino and the Indian monsoon is now much more complicated than it used to be.The implications of these shifting weather patterns go beyond rainfall statistics. The uncertainty has grown for farmers, who depend on timely and predictable monsoon rains to sow and harvest their crops. Heavy rains, which occur suddenly, can damage standing crops, and long dry periods between rain events deplete soil moisture and affect productivity. These changes pose a threat to the livelihoods of millions of people who make their living from farming.Cities are no less vulnerable. Many cities of India are still experiencing flash floods due to heavy rain falling in a few hours. Many cities are ill equipped to deal with these extreme weather events, due to poor drainage systems, rapid urbanisation and encroachment on natural water bodies.

In other parts of the world, however, water scarcity remains a problem due to the uneven distribution of rainfall. Scientists say the time has come to make climate resilience a national priority. Advanced technology and artificial intelligence can be used to improve weather forecasting and provide more precise local predictions. Investments in flood resistant infrastructure, rainwater harvesting and sustainable water management are also critical. Farmers should be encouraged to grow climate resilient crops and use modern irrigation methods to reduce dependence on uncertain rainfall. Public awareness is also important.Citizens can help by conserving water, protecting forests, preventing pollution and supporting the environment.
Education institutions and local governments should join forces to raise awareness about climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.India has made big promises on renewable energy and cuts in carbon emissions. But preparing for the near term impacts of climate change is just as important as preventing future warming. Policymakers, scientists, businesses and communities must work together to create systems that can better cope with more erratic weather. Shifting monsoons remind us that climate change is no longer a problem for the future but a reality of today, impacting food security, public health, infrastructure and economic stability. The lessons from the 2026 monsoon season highlight the urgent need for stronger climate policies, scientific innovation and public participation. Understanding these changing patterns will be crucial to India’s future resilience, but so too will be taking decisive steps to prepare for them.
